The Milaus were supposed to be an outlet for some guys already engaged in other bands in their area, a combo to create for "unplugging" or who knows...
A couple of self-produced demos emerge, a few concerts, a name change (originally it was Zonka Experience), and the decision to take things more seriously.
"Rock Da City!" (2002) is the first long-distance trial. Produced by Giulio Favero (former guitarist of One Dimensional Man), released by Giacomo Spazio's Cane Andaluso, who had already reissued the second self-titled demo, enriching it with a delightful package and replacing the title with "United Slave of Amusement" (2001), this latest work by the five guys from Morbegno (Sondrio) is a little gem of our homegrown indie-rock.
It opens masterfully with "Blanket Man" with the little chorus toward the end that you could sing even while you're getting a ticket (well... within certain limits...) it's so carefree.
"Ars Attack," "Happy Coccinella," "Rock Connection," engaging rhythms, certain vocal interweavings that remind me of Tom Barman and Stef Kamil Carlens in '94 hand in hand. A good dose of quirky pop, two basses present in the lineup, guitar and violin sharing the stage, always ready to dialogue creating harmonies that easily stick in your head, without ever being trivial. Calmer moments like the relaxing "An Ocean" with a chorus where the singer seems to mumble a tongue twister.
Also noteworthy is "One Emotional Fish" with its funky intro, the presence of a trombone midway making it almost jazz, and a hypnotic and disturbed finale.
The lyrics are all in English, except for a few verses here and there reminding us that they are Italian and that there's certainly a reason to be happy about this. There's something worthwhile even here...
9 tracks in total. Not one loses freshness or bores the listener.
Less than a year ago they were recommended to me, and I'm still thanking those who did...
