The first solo attempt of the four from adolescence, all produced by Hall Davis and by Motown, this Got to be there already demonstrates all the vocal grit of 13-year-old Michael Jackson.

In Ain't no sunshine it opens with the choruses, and continues with the solo voice in I wanna be you are. In the third track, Girl don't take your love from me, the choruses return, before the beautiful In our small way. Closing the side A of the vinyl is Michael's first solo hit, Got to be there, but it's the following Rockin' Robin, which opens side B, that achieves greater success. It is a revisitation of a typical '50s rock.

After Wings of my love, perhaps the weakest track on the LP, comes the crescendo of Maria (you were the only one), where Michael's voice reaches its highest expressive peak.

To close, Love is here and now you're gone and the more convincing You've got a friend.

For the quality of Michael's voice, considering the age, we could even give 4 stars, but the repertoire is rather immature, so I give 3 stars.

We could compare this experimental phase of Michael, making the necessary differences, to Battiato's experimentalism.

Before 1979 hands over to the great discography Off the wall and L'era del cinghiale bianco.
