THE REVIEW

Despite having become a chart-topping group, the Canadian band Metric can still be considered an Indie group. They have chosen to remain such by staying true to their record label "Last Gang" despite their overwhelming success and the allure of the Major labels.

Their "Live at Metropolis" from 2008 gives us an insight into their true artistic dimension. Originally released as a DVD, it is also available on CD. The live recording does not include tracks from their latest "Fantasies" (already highlighted on Debaser as one of the best albums of this early 2009 alongside "Swoon" by Silversun Pickups)  but instead features some of the best tracks from their previous albums.

What immediately stands out in the live performance is the technical confidence and cohesion of the band, showcasing great expertise. Emily's voice is incredible, never a flaw or dip in tone. Even a certain shyness of the singer, which I think I can perceive,  blends well with the band's image that doesn't want to lose its connections with its Indie origins and with other groups that have been less fortunate. Haines is a full-fledged artist, versatile and prolific. Capable of parallel projects and of producing two enviable solo albums with "The Soft Skeleton."

So, great live Indie music, in the truest sense of the word.

Happy listening. Alex
