The Profile

Messer für Frau Müller is a Russian electronic duo from Saint Petersburg, formed in 1991 by Oleg Kostrov and Oleg Gitarkin. Known for playful, sample-heavy collages that splice lounge, surf, and drum’n’bass, they released key albums like Allo, Superman! (1999), Second Hand Dreams (2000), and Hyper Utesov Presents (2001).

Duo from Saint Petersburg (Kostrov and Gitarkin). Style marked by extensive sampling from music, cinema, and TV; ironic, genre-hopping arrangements (lounge, surf, drum’n’bass). Messer Chups is their surf-leaning side-project. Their popularity rose in the early 2000s with internet/Myspace exposure; they toured Europe, received radio and Russian MTV play, and their music appeared in commercials. Active from 1991 and documented through at least 2006.

Three reviews celebrate Messer für Frau Müller’s playful, sample-heavy electronics and genre-hopping style. The Saint Petersburg duo (Oleg Kostrov and Oleg Gitarkin) blends lounge, surf, and drum’n’bass with ironic Soviet-pop parodies. Allo, Superman! (1999) and Second Hand Dreams (2000) stand out, with Hyper Utesov Presents (2001) capturing their lightest, most irreverent side. The tone is affectionate, amused, and consistently laudatory.
