I went to buy "Il Vile" in the summer of '96 driven by two great reasons. One, Marlene Kuntz comes from my city and often they were seen and heard in venues near my home, and secondly Cristiano was a substitute teacher at my girlfriend's school (now my wife) and my friends' school, and for some reason, this intrigued and stimulated me greatly. I bought this cassette tape, unwrapped it, and played it in my car stereo! At my first listen, I was unprepared and taken aback as if I were being unexpectedly questioned about literature and had never opened a book. Total darkness, I couldn't disentangle the lyrics from the music, the guitars created a sticky layer of sound in my ears, and my brain received only confusion. The lyrics were incomprehensible to me, and they even seemed to be in a language unknown to me.

I promptly abandoned this record for a few days, I was not ready, I had not prepared myself. A few days later, I tried again to listen to it with headphones, with the booklet of lyrics in front of me, and little by little a world began to open up before me—a world I had never frequented, made of noise, of deep lamentations that strike you, of poetry, and of profound rhythms to which I slowly began to acclimate, and everything started to please me. Over time, the lyrics began to become clearer, and discussing them with my girlfriend, we tried to interpret them and give them our own reading.

We succeeded in this endeavor and listened to this album for hours, and by following Marlene live that summer, we also managed to perceive another side of their poetry and their musical power. Certainly, "Il Vile" and Marlene in 1996 were not for everyone, it was definitely not an "easy" album, but I can assure you that the effort to "understand" it was not in vain, quite the opposite....

It would be reductive to speak of each track individually; for me, this work should be listened to in its entirety and in all its acidity. I recommend it to you, and I advise you not to give up after the first few listens.

Quanto fa male lavorare
al male che compare a causa dei
miei vuoti d'anima
Sento l'inutilita' obbligata
delle scuse solite:
il mio costume, la tua rabbia su di me

Come stavamo ieri...
sara' cosi' domani?
Dimmi di si

Quanto fa male ritornare
al gelo dei sorrisi uccisi
dalle nostre lacrime
Quanto fa male devastare
gli argini del nostro scorrere:
la terra e' fradicia anche al sole oramai

Come stavamo ieri...
sara' cosi' domani?
Dimmi di si

The absolute masterpiece of Marlene Kuntz.

An album without flaws, solid, in one word: indispensable.

By loureedo

"Il Vile is so perfect that I believe it created problems for Marlene Kuntz themselves, unjustly obliged to repeat the unrepeatable."

"A record narrated and explained in the very lyrics of the songs composing it, within which we find pieces explaining the raw why of this work."

By dellas

"Il Vile is an album tough, hard to penetrate and understand, steeped in physical pain and an apparently incurable existential unease."

"'Ape regina' is undoubtedly the apex of the parable and the masterpiece of the album, an intensely deep song difficult to interpret."

"Il vile" is an album electric, noise at extreme levels, sweet and bitter, relentless to the extreme.

I believe few songs manage to convey such strong emotions as 'Ape Regina'; a queen bee buzzing ready to sting, surrounded by a pulsating bass and a drum heartbeat.

Marlene Kuntz recorded "Il Vile" in 1996... consolidating a completely personal and unmistakable style.

"Il Vile" is a cultured album, a true masterpiece of refined poetry, yet it remains a rock album, imbued with anger, aggressiveness, pride, and expressive urgency.
