Dream Theater want to start making expressive music again, a characteristic they frankly lost back in 2001 with 'Metropolis Pt.2'. This album turned out to be a real turning point for DT, who seemed to have run out of ideas with their latest records but instead seem capable of churning out innovative albums like this one.

A truly brilliant start, that rapid and engaging prog note by note captivates immediately. With this album, it seems they want to prove that they still want to amaze and experiment, and in my opinion, they have succeeded almost exemplary.

Has no one noticed yet that the band does nothing but slightly modify songs already written in the past? The DT want to be megalomaniacs, they want to act like they play endless suites...to amaze the drooling followers who would follow them to the world’s end.

This album is, in my opinion, one of the best in the entire Dream Theater discography. Portnoy, besides performing and composing, is increasingly present (this time with excellent results) behind the microphone.

The video is entirely animated, telling the story of a boy flying with a girl in a cyberpunk dream. Labrie’s singing alternates between sweet parts and more powerful ones, creating a unique power ballad.

Without 'The Ministry of Lost Souls' this album would have little to exhibit but WITH IT it makes sense. Their purpose is that, to continue to be the talk of everyone, and they continue to succeed...

The idea to use triggers on the bass drums proves successful, creating what I think is the most beautiful sound ever produced by them in the band’s entire history. James LaBrie now really can’t do it anymore; he deliberately lacks the vocal clarity that always distinguished him, especially in the early albums.

Systematic Chaos, I find an album of excellent craftsmanship, indeed it should be considered the album that brings DT back to their best sound. The finale is also beautiful, where Petrucci’s heavy guitars are accompanied by Jordan Rudess’s continuum.
