Championship Vinyl Shop

Dafer Youssef - Soupir Eternel (Tunisia, 2006)

I might seem biased because I had the pleasure of seeing the artist mentioned above live in one of the most beautiful concerts of my life, but when you perform a thousand concerts worldwide, acclaimed and in demand everywhere, and play with artists of the caliber of Markus Stockhausen, Jon Hassell, Herbie Hancock, Marcus Miller, and our Paolo Fresu, it must mean something.

Dhafer Youssef is one of the leading contemporary specialists in the oud, the fretless Middle Eastern lute, prevalent in the Maghreb, Turkey, Persia, and the Arab countries, which he has helped liberate from its traditional role and bring into modernity. Since the late 1990s, he has established himself as one of the prominent ambassadors of the musical encounter between East and West, of certain world music linked to jazz and improvisational music, extending to Brazilian and Caribbean music and to sinuous and elusive Indian melodies. Supported by a remarkable band of musicians, the sound of his unique instrument and his voice blend masterfully with today’s musical technology, incorporating sampled sounds, synthesizers, and electronic percussion.

Hermanos Gutiérrez is a Latin instrumental group formed in 2015 in Zurich by Ecuadorian-Swiss brothers Alejandro Gutiérrez (guitar and lap steel) and Estevan Gutiérrez (guitar and percussion). The band's genre is a mix of Latin and Western music. It is music that sings without needing a vocalist, lyrical without needing words, with a haunting and solitary cadence.

Nihiloxica - Endongo (Uganda, 2017)

The Nihiloxica project arises from the meeting of a group of traditional Ugandan percussionists and Spooky-J and PQ, two young men from Leeds possessed by the techno rhythms generated by their analog synths. This project harnesses the full force of the ancient Bugandan drumming tradition of Uganda and focuses it on the contemporary dance floor through a dark lens of techno soundscapes. Their tribal rhythms and the trance they manage to create at each live performance are an intoxicating and hypnotic mix. Highly recommended.

Meitei = 冥丁 - Curio = 骨董 (Japan 🇯🇵 , 2018)

Meitei is a producer and composer from Hiroshima, Japan. His dreamy sound meanders through the realms of Japanese folklore and Ukiyo-E aesthetics. Ambient sounds, cracklings, field recordings, chants from distant epochs, and common voices create a potpourri of elements that blend incredibly well, immersed in atmospheres that straddle horror and phantasmagoria, all meticulously crafted with obsessive precision. Pitchfork named Kwaidan, the work from which the following track is taken, one of the best experimental albums of 2018.

Acid Arab - Stil (France/Turkey, 2016)

The powerful Parisian electronic music crew Acid Arab has enchanted festival and club audiences across Europe in recent years with their intoxicating blend of cutting-edge Western electronic music mixed with Eastern sounds and voices. Formed in 2012 by Parisian DJs Guido Minisky and Hervé Carvalho, Acid Arab has refined their style by collaborating with dozens of artists from across North Africa and the Middle East. Born in the transcultural melting pot that is Paris, their concept was to create a space for Arab culture in the world of contemporary electronic music. This fantastic track in collaboration with Turkish multi-instrumentalist composer Cem Yıldızcne is proof of that. It is loved and highly requested in my DJ sets.

Jorge Ben - O Telefone Tocou Novamente (Brazil, 1970)

There is very little to say about this masterpiece of Brazilian popular music or MPB, as the genre has been referred to for some time now. Força Bruta, the album from which it was taken, quickly became a commercial and critical success, establishing Ben as a leading artist of the tropicalist movement and a pioneer in a unique style, never before known, baptized as samba-rock. It was recorded with the band Trio Mocotó and released by Philips Records in September 1970. Conceived during a period of political tension in dictatorial Brazil, its title derives from the Portuguese term meaning "brute force," an ironic title for the decidedly relaxed mood of the album.

The album introduces an acoustic music based on a sweeter, more whimsical, and less elaborate samba compared to Ben's earlier works. Its lyrics generally explore themes of romantic passion, melancholy, and sensuality, with women holding a prominent place in his songs. For the first time, this work brings in elements of identity politics and postmodernism, with irony and a reinterpretation of established idioms.

Seine - Nebo (Croatia, 2019)

The Croatian band Seine is one of the most ingenious acts of the moment. Their music is an electrifying sonic journey that challenges every genre and label, filled with sardonic humor and authentic musical expression, straddling the edges of contemporary rock. Seine produces an amorphous sound, blending elements of noise and alternative rock, trip hop, and no wave with sporadic hints of cabaret.

Their music still revolves around the androgynous voice of Ivan. His voice embodies that of a man with swollen eyes, a dark heart, and a turbulent spirit. In his dark and amusing lyrics, he ironically explores the triangle of money, war, and transcendence from a perspective that transcends good and evil.

Lastly, I want to take a moment to appreciate the video for Nebo, a fantastic sequence shot in a very handcrafted stop motion, a rare technique nowadays in a world where everything must necessarily be filtered through a computer screen.

The production of Blyck Tchutchi, reggae and funaná, primarily based on songs with romantic nuances, features strongly autobiographical compositions that tell the stories of the migration dramas faced by his fellow countrymen in Portugal. Although he emigrated at a young age to the Lusitanian lands, he has continued to have a strong empathy with his birthplace. Today, he is a living legend in the small African state.

Babla and Kanchan - Aay Mere Dil

WORLD' FREQUENCIES

I longed for a review that showcased different types of sounds and music. A while ago, the good @[Lao Tze] wonderfully contemplated this (return to us, we are orphans of your fundamental contribution). Following in the master's footsteps, today I embark on this adventure through the sound world, hoping something strikes you as it has struck me.

Babla & Kanchan - Aay Mere Dil (India, 1984)

Laxmichand "Babla" Virji Shah and Kumari Kanchan Dinkarrao Mali-Shah, husband and wife, were an Indian musical duo, particularly active in promoting Chutney and Desi Folk music. They performed together for forty years until Kanchan's death in 2004. Regularly featured in my world music DJ sets, I believe this song has sparked the most curiosity and inquiries about it. A tender funk line moves delightfully throughout the piece, supported by finely distilled soft pop, infused entirely with sweet aromas from the East. India had its dream pop. #worldmusic #india #coeworldmusic
