they are (or were) the history of rock and contemporary music, precursors of experimental music, space rock, and progressive. Milestone albums, The Dark Side of the Moon, The Piper at the Gates of Dawn, Meddle, etc. Fantastic live performances, especially those from the '80s, well played and with excellent audio quality, thanks to the sound engineers (Alan Parsons is truly great, even with his future project). Unfortunately, as far as I'm concerned, talking about studio albums (from Wish You Were Here onwards), I just can't digest them; they're too slow, redundant, and depressed. Still, they made history.
