He could have easily shined Khrushchev's shoes; De Gaulle outmaneuvered him in every direct confrontation. He didn’t understand that the Marshall Plan era was over, he didn’t grasp Europe’s renewed economic role after '57, and he exploited the issue of equality and civil rights chiefly as an electoral tool.
