Van der Graaf Generator is an English progressive/art rock band formed in 1967, led by singer-guitarist Peter Hammill with key collaborators Hugh Banton, Guy Evans, and David Jackson. Known for dark, intense, and experimental music, they were active 1967–1972, 1975–1978, and reformed in 2005. In 1977–78 the group operated under the shortened name Van der Graaf, releasing The Quiet Zone / The Pleasure Dome and the live set Vital.
