The Profile

Van der Graaf Generator is an English progressive/art rock band formed in 1967, led by singer-guitarist Peter Hammill with key collaborators Hugh Banton, Guy Evans, and David Jackson. Known for dark, intense, and experimental music, they were active 1967–1972, 1975–1978, and reformed in 2005. In 1977–78 the group operated under the shortened name Van der Graaf, releasing The Quiet Zone / The Pleasure Dome and the live set Vital.

The band briefly shortened its name to Van der Graaf in 1977–1978, during which it released The Quiet Zone / The Pleasure Dome and the live album Vital.

A 5-star look at Van der Graaf’s 1977 pivot: a lean lineup, name shortened, and a sharp turn toward tense, song-focused prog with new wave bite. Violin and bass redefine the sound while Hammill drives the urgency. It’s not aiming for Pawn Hearts grandeur, but a present-tense reinvention that seeds later moves. Essential if you welcome prog’s friction with punk-era energy.
