It was 1994 and I was all into Pantera (who were already on a downward slope) and Sepultura's stylistic turn with "Roots," when a friend introduced me to a band called Machine Head. Well, that band blew my mind, and I must say it's a shame there wasn’t a review for this fundamental album... so I thought, why not write one?
This album is an absolute masterpiece of post-thrash metal and in many cases anticipates nu metal. The thrash comes from the experience of their mastermind Robb Flynn, ex-Vio-lence (a cult thrash metal band), who, by merging his style with the new sounds dictated by Pantera and the like, created a perfect synthesis with this album. It’s difficult to name a particular song because, in my opinion, they are all perfect, although "A Nation On Fire", "Davidian", and "The Rage To Overcome" stand a bit above the rest. As for the lyrics, they are all full of rage and a desire for justice in a world which, at the start of the '90s, had awakened from the colors and dreams of the '80s... Finally, a mention must be made of drummer Chris Kontos's performance; he does an absolutely phenomenal job here, and of the production by the legendary Colin Richardson, which gives the album an absolutely modern sound that is simultaneously clean and gritty.
In conclusion, this album is a must for all fans of bands like Pantera, Sepultura, and Fear Factory.
We have been informed that this review also appears (in whole or in part) on truemetal.it and we have been requested to remove it.
"Burn My Eyes is the bloody masterpiece of Flynn and company and would be, for me, obligatorily among the usual 5/6 records to take to a deserted island."
"Let freedom ring with a shotgun blast!!!"
