The Profile

M83 is a French electronic music project led by Anthony Gonzalez, formed in Antibes in 2001. Known for blending shoegaze textures, dream pop atmospheres, and synth-driven melodies, M83 broke through with Dead Cities, Red Seas & Lost Ghosts and achieved global recognition with Midnight City and the double album Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming. The project has also composed film soundtracks, including Oblivion and You and the Night.

Reviews note origins in Antibes and a sound spanning shoegaze, ambient, synth-pop, and dream pop. Saturdays = Youth (2008) is praised for adolescent themes; Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming features Zola Jesus on “Intro” and mixes pop-rock with interludes; Junk draws criticism for radio-leaning dance-pop but includes Susanne Sundfør on “For The Kids.” Early work has been compared to My Bloody Valentine.

DeBaser’s M83 coverage spans early shoegaze-tinged triumphs to pop-forward turns. Reviews praise the dreamy, cinematic sweep of the classics while questioning later commercial polish. Saturdays = Youth and parts of Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming draw strong acclaim; Junk divides opinions. Overall verdict: a visionary project balancing atmosphere, melody, and radio sheen.
