The Profile

Luigi Tenco (1938–1967) was an Italian singer-songwriter whose intimate, melancholic songs became touchstones of the 1960s cantautore era. Known for pieces like Vedrai vedrai, Lontano Lontano, Mi sono innamorato di te, and Ciao amore, ciao, he died in Sanremo in 1967.

Used the pseudonyms Dick Ventuno and Gordon Cliff; first LP released in 1962; 1966 album often titled “Tenco”; wrote “Vedrai vedrai” (1965), dedicated to his mother; “Un giorno dopo l’altro” was used as the theme for Commissario Maigret; collaborated with Mogol on “Se stasera sono qui”; died in Sanremo during the 1967 Festival.

The reviews praise Tenco’s timeless voice, lean writing, and haunting melodies. Cornerstones include Vedrai vedrai, Lontano Lontano, Ciao amore ciao, and Un giorno dopo l’altro. Several pieces note jazz/chanson shades and intimate piano versions. His Sanremo 1967 death frames, but does not define, his legacy.
