Lev Nikolayevich Tolstoy (1828–1910) was a Russian author best known for War and Peace and Anna Karenina; his later religious and moral writings and novels such as Resurrection and The Death of Ivan Ilyich shaped debates on morality and social justice.

Born 1828, died 1910. Published A Confession (also translated as A Confession) in 1882, which marked a public spiritual crisis. His later religious and moral positions influenced figures such as Mahatma Gandhi. He was excommunicated by the Russian Orthodox Church (1901).

DeBaser reviews praise Tolstoy's narrative power, psychological depth and moral concerns. Anna Karenina is highlighted for its opening line and portrayal of love. The Death of Ivan Ilyich is read as a concentrated moral parable about bourgeois life and death. Resurrezione is noted for its moral urgency and questions of social justice and redemption.
