CocaColaLive@Mtv: a festival (I said it big...) that usually doesn't feature big names.
But, on May 20, or thereabouts, I discover that on the last date of this series of concerts, on September 4 in Civitavecchia, the Korn will perform!!! My favorite band, damn it!!! Obviously, I try in every way to get the tickets (you had to use a code that was found under the Coca-Cola cans)... and in the end, I get them!!!
The event that the Korn will participate in is perhaps a bit too commercial, I admit... But when do you get another chance to see Korn practically for free???
The fateful September 4 arrives: around 10 in the morning, I leave and arrive at the destination around one-thirty. A little rest and, after two hours, straight to the concert gates. I already notice that a good 99% of those present are rooting only for Korn (and rightly so, I would add...), ignoring the other bands that will perform, namely Super Elastic Bubble Plastic (?!?), Linea 77, and the Rasmus.
The gates are closed and I wait a few hours... In the meantime, I enjoy the Korn rehearsing some songs (including "Blind," "Falling Away From Me," and "It's On!"...).
Finally, the gates open and people immediately shout "We want Korn"... and I join in too, logical. Shortly before the start of the evening, I catch a glimpse of Munky, the guitarist of Korn, backstage!!! I feel faint... I had Korn close by, holy patience!!!
Finally, it begins: the first band, the Super Elastic Bubble Plastic, starts at 8:30 PM. As expected (as it was to be demonstrated), they are nothing special, actually...
At 9:00 PM, the Linea 77 arrive, and I have to admit that live, they rock a lot. Maybe I need to evaluate them better (although someone has to tell me what that big bald guy is doing in the band...). Shortly before 10:00 PM, the Rasmus perform: the Finns don't even manage to play four songs due to Korn fans insisting on seeing the band from Bakersfield... I saw everything flying, from toilet paper to jackets, from plastic bottles to glass beer bottles (and thank goodness it was forbidden to bring alcohol to the concert, but that's another story...).
Finally, after 10:00 PM, they arrive... The Korn!!! The crowd is in a frenzy, myself included... the Korn immediately hit hard with "Here To Stay." Next is the turn of incomprehensible and nonsensical (but awesome...) verses of "Twist," then moving on to "Got The Life." A.D.I.D.A.S. live is a show (everyone singing "all day I dream about sex"... wonderful!!!). The fifth song is (surprisingly) "Dirty," which is savagely beautiful live... "Falling Away From Me" is great, although Munky, on the microphone, needs to work a little more... In "Did My Time," Jonathan delivers an insane final growl, and the trinity "Shoots And Ladders-One-Freak On A Leash" does not disappoint at all (spectacular, then, Jon when he plays the bagpipes!). The next track is "Another Brick In The Wall"... Damn, the Korn did it well!!!
Munky and David seemed guided by God himself, while Fieldy playing bass first sitting, then lying down, is an image to be immortalized... Blind is a grand spectacle, when everyone was jumping, then... (even though it was dangerous, considering the trash on the ground, and I still thank that idiot who placed a glass bottle under my feet while I was jumping...).
Here, the live broadcast on MTV ends. The Korn concert too? NO!!!
Our guys continue, playing four more songs, namely "4 U" (wonderful), the emotional "No One's There" (also rarely performed live), the excellent "Somebody Someone" (one of my favorite Korn songs) and the lively "Y’All Want A Single"... And so, everything ended, unfortunately... Even if hearing Munky say thank you IN ITALIAN at the end was quite exciting...
In the end, I tried to get at least one of the 4's autographs, but I didn't have the chance...
After the concert, I returned to the hotel where I was staying and still thought about the magnificent evening I had...
Even today, I get goosebumps listening to a Korn song... it was a magnificent concert, too bad the four didn't play at least one new song... They said "Hypocrites" was a blast... Well, I'll wait for the next album to come out.
One question I asked myself before the concert was: how will it be without Brian "Head" Welch? Well... In some songs, you could feel how much he was missed (like in "Here To Stay" or "Got The Life"), but I must admit that Jon, Fieldy, Munky, and David managed quite well... And Rob Patterson (Head's replacement for the Korn’s European tour: he wasn't seen on stage because he played backstage) seems, I think he played Head's guitar parts decently...
An absolutely divine evening and I can't wait for Korn to return here, in Italy. But next time I won't tolerate a new presence at CocaColaLive@Mtv...
I want a grand concert, by themselves, without the presence of any other band, so there is no restriction to the setlist and no time limit.
Just one chant: WE WANT KORN!!! WE WANT KORN!!! WE WANT KORN!!!
P.S.: Oh, with me was also durasno7, aka Edoardo Casini... He greets “cordially” all of you...
