It is the most important album I have made. These songs reflect the most insecure and doubtful part of me. They deal with uncertainties about the path I have taken and failure.
Humility in the words of the female component of this project.
When she talks about failure, she is referring precisely to episodes like the ones that pushed her to write the first track of this record (Chicago). The two have ended concerts receiving real standing ovations, just as they discovered the total absence of an audience during the famous date to which the singer-songwriter refers.
Melancholy is part of their musical offering, just like the respectable old-style folk they are inspired by.
Josienne Clarke and Ben Walker have a rich musical past and discography both as a duo and as soloists. The former (Josienne Clarke, PicaPica) has enjoyed wonderful reviews since the beginning.
Ben is an acclaimed guitarist (praised also as one of the best styles in the folk field, his) and an indie producer (Felix M-B, Scrounge, Ma Polaine's Great Decline). On his site, he also offers lessons and advice on arrangements.
Despite being English, Josienne's voice sounds damn Irish (take note) while the modus operandi of the studio recordings emphasizes the clarity of the various elements (there are also orchestral instruments).
I believe that Bathed In Light is the pinnacle of the tracklist; an ideal and successful compromise between catchiness and songwriting.
Clarke might find herself wondering if it's really worth continuing on the path of an artistic career, but in the end, the response that her music receives is the answer.
Songs that shape inner landscapes; reinventing the folk song.
