Jordan Rudess chose the right title for an album that embodies Progressive 100%, and even more. "Rhythm Of Time," one of the most Prog albums of the last 10 years, contains a collection of splendid pieces, played by perfectly chosen artists for such a solo project of this caliber.
Very electronic and somewhat 'futuristic' sounds make the pieces unique, with high-level riffs that balance everything. 8 tracks, of which only 2 have vocal parts. The rest is left entirely to Jordan and friends, who delight us with their instruments.
But let's move on to the tracks on the CD. "Time Crunch" marks the beginning. A very techno intro (in true Rudess fashion) gives way to guitar, bass, and drums, merging everything and making it heavier. This first song gives an idea of how the rest of the album is set up. We move to "Screaming Head," the track I prefer. A 'Space' Intro introduces the rest of the instruments. A very technical song with various themes that unite towards the end, then fade. These first two songs are the ones that will primarily appeal to a first-time listener.
From the third track onwards, everything starts to become much more technical, excluding the vocal tracks. Just listen to "Insectsamongus," "What Four," and "Ra." The vocal tracks are also the most boring because they relate little to the rest, lacking the Prog that is present, and very much so, in the other songs. "Bar Hopping With Mister Picky" is the instrumental that attracted me the least, perhaps because it's a bit dull compared to the rest. In conclusion, with this work, Jordan Rudess has touched on Progressive with a fingertip. A divine piece of work, worthy of being listened to.
The only downside is that listening to this album in its entirety is very difficult, perhaps precisely because it's too Prog, but if you love listening to songs of a high technical caliber, this is the solo work for you!
If you are a Dream Theater fan, this is a CD not to be missed for your collection.
