THE REVIEW

Five songs extracted from the film and five new original compositions by John Frusciante.

The harmony between the tracks and the events of The Brown Bunny is relevant, unlike most other cases. Just consider the choice to include the small masterpiece Milk And Honey by the singer-songwriter Jackson C. Frank.

The piece (like the entire eponymous album) was produced in 1965 by Paul Simon and gave the young singer a brief moment of artistic glory. His style, so sparse and deeply intimate, was cited as an inspiration by big names like Nick Drake and Marianne Faithfull. Unfortunately, the star soon faded for Jackson, who, due to numerous tragic events, developed a severe depression, until his passing from cardiac arrest at 56. He withdrew from the world of music to seek refuge in his parents' home; the ghost of a companion's and a child's death dragged him away.

The gray streets contrast with the sentimentality of Gordon Lightfoot and his Beautiful. The folk rock legend, idol of people like Neil Young and Elvis, casts a ray of light beyond those inhumane vehicles by narrating an old love story that does not seem to end.

Two nocturnal jazz suites like Smooth and Tears For Dolphy seem to scream solitude.

The timing of the soundtrack is easily noticeable. Curiously, only the first part of the film features it, leaving the rest in the darkness of a deafening silence. A silence mentioned earlier that emphasizes the protagonist's feelings. Redemption seems to lie at the end of an endless avenue, nothing is the same after the dialogue with the ghost.

The slender lament of an essential Frusciante accompanies the beautiful Forever Away towards the end of the journey. Dying Song, Falling to mark the conclusion for us viewers. But who knows if the battle has been won.

Yes and no are the answers, written in my true love’s eyes

Autumn’s leaving and winter’s coming –I think that I’ll be moving along

I’ve got to leave her and find another,

I’ve got to sing my heart’s true song.
