"A Matter Of Life And Death," to define it, just one word is enough: masterpiece. But no, dear Iron Maiden fans, the new album from your beloved Metal grandpas really sucks. The choruses in "These Colours Don't Run" are embarrassing, the song rhythms are incredibly predictable, and going round and round, the riff is always the same. But then it also takes intelligence!!!
An album of Classic Heavy Metal can't have all the songs starting with a damned arpeggio. My god, the horror of the opening track's chorus "Different World", even Billy Joe Armstrong from Green Day came to give old Dickinson a hand. No, no, false alarm, it was just my impression, but the result is still pathetic. Steve Harris's galloping bass runs are not enough to save face, the 30 arpeggios scattered across the album aren't enough to make up for the lack of creativity, and not even a few technically decent solos are enough to raise the score. We salvage the final "The Legacy" and very little else.
Dear Iron Maiden, if you can't produce an average-level album, why do you struggle to carry on? Just play live shows, hasn't that idea occurred to you? Retirement? Not even that? No? Then I'll tell you this; even if you take 7 guitarists, since four chords are more than enough, you continue to sell substandard quality merchandise. I loved you with the legendary Paul Di'Anno on vocals, I still held respect for the first part of the Dickinson era, and I rediscovered you with "The X Factor," but if you're not able to produce an album that is at least half the worth of "Angel Of Retribution" (by the legendary colleagues Judas Priest), maybe it's time to consider retiring. Andre Agassi just did it, maybe Schumacher will too, and I think having twenty years more than them, your time has been up for a while now. I know you won't stop here, since your devoted fans would continue to adore you even if you released a Reggae album. Sold-out in Milan and consequently double-date, on top of the charts in Italy, astonishing news, (pseudo)Metal ahead of Britney Spears, Finley, and Zero Assoluto.
Congratulations at least for this, and (if I don't say it I'm not at peace with myself) anyway UP THE IRONS!!! Rating: 4
