"Questions?" is the title of the third album by the Insomnia Creep project, born in 2009 at the initiative of guitarist Giacomo Casile. Since their debut in 2011, one can notice a varied and barrier-free approach in the compositional side of this offering, starting from a base of extreme metal and touching on alternative and nu metal elements. Insomnia Creep offers something really special by molding a rocky and epic yet dreamy and introspective sound. This new work moves even more in an alternative direction, even playing with jazz/progressive and electronics, challenging the audience it refers to. Unlike the first work "Hallucination City," where there was a real band, now everything is managed by Giacomo who takes care of every aspect; from production, to writing, to the vocal parts. The album opens with "Apostatic," imagine a strange combination where a death metal-style riffing meets Nirvana, System of a Down and Tool in the vocal parts, without resulting in something bizarre or confusing. The vocal approach is quite unique, often filtered with effects and almost never pushes into truly aggressive singing, which might make some frown, but I appreciated the courage of an unconventional choice. The second track "Deimos" even surprises with a grunge rock chorus after granite and very fast riffs reminiscent of Strapping Young Lad. The album is entirely characterized by experimentation and sets no barriers, in the following "Crazy Train" and the instrumental "Magic Chrysalis," we even find Zappa-like influences complete with sax and jazz rock inserts. Industrial and electronic influences instead dominate the songs "Squash" and the ironic instrumental "Hypnagogic Popsicle." In short, no rules or desire to recruit fans of one genre or another, just a lot of passion and great artistic freedom. "The Code" even attacks with a post-punk bass beat reminiscent of Joy Division. I hope that Insomnia Creep manages to receive greater attention because it's a truly valid idea and it would be a shame for these songs to get lost in the underground chaos. Listen to them.
