LA RECENSIONE

It is rare but not impossible for an artistic project deeply rooted in our local folklore to enjoy an international scope. I undoubtedly wish Idda to continue down this path in future releases as well.

Idda is the stage name chosen by Catania-born Valeria Romeo and it means in Sicilian dialect "her, that one".
The EP Kunta includes among its lyrics references to legends and myths (such as the Greek myth of Alfeo and Aretusa) while not renouncing the contemporaneity of some quotes in the more "playful" Bilenu, which is the driving force of the entire project.

The darkness of these tracks might bring to mind the memory of Rosa Balistreri and her love anguish sung in dialect, but in Idda there also exists the boldness of the latest Rosalía (in this sense Kunta could be considered an illegitimate offspring of the acclaimed Motomami, just listen to it). With this, I do not mean to diminish the strong personality of the young artist by naming important figures, but rather to try to place her debut within a musical context.

It happens that record labels, among the big ones around, try to soften or distort over time the proposals of those who sign. I hope that whatever happens, and Idda decides, every future decision will be made with the determination to give a worthy follow-up to this EP, or at least to expand the good ideas contained in Kunta.
