The Profile

Howlin Rain is an American rock band formed in 2004 by Ethan Miller (of Comets on Fire). Their sound blends psychedelic, southern, roots and hard-rock elements with jam-heavy excursions. Key releases include the self-titled debut (2006), Magnificent Fiend (2008), The Russian Wilds (2012, produced with Rick Rubin’s involvement via Tim Green), The Alligator Bride (2018) and The Dharma Wheel (2021).

Founded by Ethan Miller (vocals, guitar) in Northern California in 2004; associated with Comets on Fire; style rooted in 1970s psychedelic, southern and roots rock; The Russian Wilds saw Rick Rubin’s guidance with Tim Green at the console.

Three reviews chart Howlin Rain’s 70s-rooted journey: a roaring, reference-laden debut; a lusher, keyboard-and-horns Magnificent Fiend that tones down the wildness; and The Russian Wilds, buffed by Rick Rubin/Tim Green with R&B, prog and classic rock flourishes. Ethan Miller’s raspy vocals and jam-forward arrangements are consistent anchors. Overall reception: warm to very positive.
