Hoobastank, the Californian band that hit success with the track “Crawling In The Dark”, is back. After two years of absence, the Californian artists have released their third work: “The Reason”. Produced by Howard Benson, a producer of famous bands like P. O. D. and Cold, the album resumes the American group's style, characterized by post-grunge sounds and notes of alternative rock.
The LP is a good job, not outstanding, as the group, although finding great harmony in the recording studio and on stage, fails to produce innovative tracks that lack the repetitiveness that often marks emerging bands. Of course, one cannot speak of a rising star, nor of a well-established band in the international music scene; Hoobastank is stuck in an intermediate stage, where the music created often presents many weak points.
The songs are catchy, they glide over the skin very quickly, only a few tracks manage to leave a mark, like those tracks where the true soul of the band comes out to shout its dissatisfaction to the world, their loneliness, their freedom, the desire to escape. It is precisely in these moments that the personality of the band strongly emerges to lead the spectator to witness the various aspects of existence.
The best song on the LP is the title track: “The Reason”. It is a very intense song that deals with love, not the sweet or romantic kind, but the true and real one; the frontman, in fact, thanks to this love, managed to find a valid reason to change.
"I found myself spontaneously whistling it in the shower, catching it on the radio, and turning up the volume while singing along... and I’m not ashamed at all!"
"They’re not bad. Same Difference and What Happened To Us have that (innocent and harmless) healthy power rock feel, and the ballads are cute."
