LA RECENSIONE

In 2007, Hilary Duff returns to the music stage following previous successes with this "Dignity," an album where the singer demonstrates excellent inspiration and creativity, and its style is more hip-hop compared to its predecessors, with strong dance influences.

It starts with ‘Stranger’ (second single) with oriental samples followed by basses marking the rhythm; slightly dull lyrics but well-paced periodically (which makes me question if she wrote them herself), addressing a person whose sincerity we doubt; ‘Dignity’ has always well-paced lyrics but is quite lacking in meaning or poetry, with a pop base; ‘Danger’ the fourth track is pretty nice and describes a thorny romantic relationship, ‘Gypsy Woman’ is a fun song, with a beautiful rhythm in the chorus and even a background with a kind of distorted childish voice, ‘Never stop’ is nothing special, while the next ‘No work, all play’ is quite engaging sonically and melodically, with call-and-response melodies in R'n'B style that Hilary interprets very well.

Between you and me’ follows the more lively path, and the lyrics are mocking towards someone unable to court her properly (could there be a reference to her ex-boyfriend, the Good Charlotte singer?). ‘Dreamer’ maintains the same lyric themes. ‘Happy’ instead speaks of newfound confidence, with a few cello chords present. ‘Burned,’ the song I consider the most beautiful of the album, has a very sweet melody, and the lyrics are also pleasant and sincere from Hilary. Another beautiful song is ‘Play with fire’ (another single) which also includes a guitar.

So, in conclusion, an album a bit monothematic, but it’s not necessarily a flaw, as the melodies are quite engaging; and in any case, it cannot be said that Hilary isn't well-tuned.

"‘Dignity’ is one of those many forgettable albums in music history, even if the title is quite fitting concerning the dignity Hilary lacks in releasing such an album."

"For the rest of the album, Duff does nothing but pant, believing herself to be a sexy she-cat over often absurd rhythms."
