The latest album from Swedish band Hardcore Superstar neither adds nor takes away anything from what has already been heard in previous works. Innovations in their sound are practically absent; generally, one gets the feeling that the group is settling into a now well-established proposition - which nevertheless seems to please everyone, from fans to industry magazines - composed of typical chart-topping hair-metal anthems and acoustic ballads.
Listening to the album is still enjoyable, the simple melodies around which the tracks are built are always immediate and easily memorable.
The lyrics completely reflect the shallowness of intent and total lack of intellectual aspirations of the band; the approach is defiant and full of revelry. After all, titles like "Sadistic Girls" and "Last Call for Alcohol" leave very little room for interpretation. The usual inclusion of melodic tracks is well represented here by "Here Comes the Sick Bitch" and "Run to Your Mama", in which a piano accompaniment also makes an appearance.
A special mention goes to the single "Moonshine", characterized by a structure alternating a danceable motif with a decidedly frenetic punk-rock rhythm, destined to claim more than a few victims in live settings.
In general, "Split your lip" is a good commercial product, recorded and played with technical competence, and primarily aimed at a very young audience. All the songs on the album are potential live repertoire classics, suitable for entertaining and involving the audience with extremely singable choruses. Those who were already familiar with and appreciated the Scandinavian band before this release will most likely not be disappointed, but unfortunately not - this is certain - surprised either.
