THE REVIEW

Guerilla Toss are a quintet from Boston active since 2010 and based in New York.

Released by James Murphy's DFA (LCD Soundsystem), GT Ultra is inspired by the title of the MKULTRA project, drawing more from its aspect related to drugs than the conspiratorial theme.

The group's sound combines the dance-punk of the '00s with a more noise and no wave perspective. But there's much more: in GT Ultra, elements of psychedelia, (post-)funk, and an arty approach to pop coexist without ever resorting to overly forced and cerebral tricks.

The soul of the album is modern, despite being blatantly referential at times. To draw notable comparisons, among many, it sounds like Talking Heads in 2017. For a contemporary comparison, they can be likened to their fellow countrymen Deerhoof, but in a more dance-leaning way, or to the French La Femme, but in a more experimental and punk guise.
