The Profile

English progressive rock group formed by Royal College of Music alumni Richard Harvey and Brian Gulland, later joined by Graeme Taylor and Dave Oberlé. Known for fusing crumhorns, bassoon and other early instruments with rock, they achieved acclaim with Red Queen to Gryphon Three (1974), shifted toward pop on Treason (1977), and returned in the 2010s with new albums.

Formed in London by Richard Harvey and Brian Gulland; instrumentation includes flute, bassoon, and crumhorn; commissioned for Peter Hall’s National Theatre production of Shakespeare’s The Tempest (1973); toured with Yes in 1975; widely recognized for the album Red Queen to Gryphon Three.

The reviews celebrate Gryphon’s blend of medieval/Renaissance timbres with 1970s prog. Midnight Mushrumps and the debut showcase acoustic early-music colors; Red Queen to Gryphon Three is praised as their masterpiece, albeit with notes on technical excess. Raindance is viewed as a mixed, pop-leaning detour with memorable moments. Overall verdict: inventive, skilled, and essential for prog devotees.
