Daily dialogue between father and son:
F- What the hell are you listening to? You always have those damn headphones on!
S- They are the revelation of the moment, they're called Green Day
F- My dear, it’s clear you don’t understand a damn thing about music.... Green Day existed even when your father didn’t wear dentures
S- But their first album came out in 2004?
F- Are you joking? The first came out at the sunset of the '80s, but all these damn people have only just now realized they exist... I still remember when "Basket Case" was on the radio... when I think about it, I tear up a little... you have no idea how cool that "Dookie" from '94 was
S- But "American Idiot" rocks... it's much better... I'm sure
F- That's what their new album is called?
S- Yes
F- Those fools... now they're getting into politics... bah... let me hear how they've evolved
[The son hands one earphone to the father and they listen together]
F- What is this whine?
S- It's called "Boulevard Of Broken Dreams", it's the second single, isn't it a marvel? Listen to those virtuoso performances... it makes me think of chocolate
F- It makes me think of something else brown... listen to that whining... the musical background isn't up to their past... it's a ballad with a laxative effect... speaking of which... I really need to take a dump
S- No! Wait! If you like hyper-accelerated tracks, listen to "Holiday"
F- And this would be hyper-accelerated and punk? My son, don’t you know the Sex Pistols, Ramones, and Clash?
S- And what do you think of this one? It's the title track...
F- Finally some good riff, but in my opinion, it gets old after a couple of listens
S- Ugh... try this one
But the father is already gone, shocked by those disgraceful listens and thank goodness he missed out on crap like "Give me the novacaine" or "St. Jimmy" or he would have had a heart attack
This results in 'American Idiot,' a public denunciation of George W.'s administration set like a rock opera.
'American Idiot' finally surpasses the (many) limits of its own genre, while obviously always remaining attentive to the immediacy it has always sought.
American Idiot particularly reveals the ideals of the band, it’s an anthem against America and the American people specifically defined as (idiots)!
Boulevard Of Broken Dreams... the most beautiful point of the song is right at the end… when those guitars attack with that haunting and very surprising melody.
"Jesus Of Suburbia is a truly remarkable and well-crafted song that, despite its length, flows smoothly and can be considered one of the best tracks on the entire album."
Green Day is like this now, and in a way, it’s perhaps a good thing since... we might get to hear some nice punk rock piece, even if commercial.
"Don’t want to be an American idiot, don’t want a nation under the new media…"
"Alienation has taken over the individual, who appears de-identified, deprived of the identity they were born with."
This damn blockbuster rock’n’roll only suitable for stupid kids... this FUCKING adolescent rock, banal in everything.
I will never forgive Green Day for ruining one of the most exciting nights of my life.
