The Profile

Gorgoroth is a Norwegian black metal band formed in 1992 in Bergen by guitarist Infernus. Known for raw, cold-sounding early albums and provocative imagery, the group became a pillar of the second wave of Norwegian black metal.

Founded by Infernus (Roger Tiegs) in Bergen in 1992; name taken from Tolkien’s plateau in Mordor. Early vocalists included Hat and Pest; Gaahl later handled vocals. Drummer Grim (Erik Brødreskift) died in 1999. Noted for a controversial 2004 concert in Kraków featuring blood and sheep heads that prompted legal action. The band later issued a re-recording titled Under the Sign of Hell 2011.

DeBaser’s reviews focus on Gorgoroth’s raw, old-school black metal roots and their icy, combative sound. Pentagram and Under the Sign of Hell earn strong praise for authenticity and impact. Incipit Satan is highlighted for experiments with industrial/ambient textures and a more varied production. One satirical pan targets Twilight of the Idols, but overall sentiment trends positive toward the classic era.
