Gilberto Gil is a Brazilian singer, songwriter and major figure of Tropicália, active since the 1960s and known for blending Brazilian styles with international influences.

Born in Salvador, Bahia. Key figure in the Tropicália movement. Served as Brazil's Minister of Culture (2003–2008).

DeBaser reviews highlight Gilberto Gil's mastery on Expresso 2222 and a respectful, sometimes too-faithful, tribute on Kaya N'gan Daya. Reviews discuss exile, London influences, tropicalismo synthesis and reggae reinterpretation. Overall appreciation with some critical notes on daringness.

For:Fans of Tropicália, MPB, Brazilian music and listeners interested in reggae-Brazil crossovers.

"Expresso 2222" is the name of this excellent album where Gil manages to win the challenge of summarizing all his musical, cultural, and personal experiences.
