"La donna cannone" is one of the most well-known songs in the Italian music scene: an unforgettable ballad that over the years has become the ultimate classic of Francesco De Gregori, whose performance at concerts turns out to be one of the most awaited and exciting moments of the live shows of the Prince of our songwriters.
Much less known, however, is the album that hosts this piece, which also carries the same title. Released in 1983, it is a mini-album with only five tracks that slightly deviate from the style of De Gregori's previous works, who at the time of release was already at the peak of popularity, having masterpieces like "Rimmel", "Bufalo Bill", and "Titanic" behind him. The famous title track is placed at the beginning of the album: the words of the Prince, inspired by a news story, and the delicate arrangement have long been part of the musical history of our country, a small heritage preserved in the hearts of thousands of people:
"..And with hands love by hands I'll take you and without saying words I'll carry you in my heart and I won't be afraid if I won't be as beautiful as you want but we'll fly into the sky in flesh and bones and we'll never return and without hunger without thirst and without wings without a net we'll fly away.."
A timeless classic that needs no further comment.
The album still has its own reason for existing even outside of "La donna cannone", and the first of two instrumental tracks, "Flirt n. 1" is here to remind us with its dreamy atmosphere, followed by the equally fine "La ragazza e la miniera", a song with a very inspired text, unjustly underestimated over the years. It then continues with the reprise, also instrumental, of "Flirt" and "Canta canta", a song about a man and his newfound freedom, which worthily closes the album.
In conclusion, it is another gem in the rich discography of Francesco De Gregori, which, in addition to containing one of the most beautiful and famous songs ever written, offers other deserving episodes.

I have cried and cry when I listen to this song.
The piano at the end, those few final notes touch my heart, they wrench and touch my heart like nothing else.
