With their third album, following the double platinum "The Colour and the Shape", the Foo Fighters establish themselves on the international scene as one of the most original and powerful bands that still keep the name of Rock high.
In this album, Dave and his bandmates gather some of the most beautiful songs of their musical career, truly unforgettable tracks such as Learn to Fly, Breakout, Next Year, Generator, and Stacked Actors, still present in the setlists of their explosive concerts.
With guitar riffs saturated with effects such as Flanger, Wah-wah, overdrive distortions, and chorus, and a voice increasingly mature and distant from the youthful times of the first post-Nirvana CD, frontman Dave Grohl manages to create both fast and slow songs capable of moving and energizing at the same time.
The first promotional video was indeed for Breakout, used for the soundtrack of the movie with Jim Carrey "Me, Myself & Irene". In the hilarious music video (at the time played nonstop on Mtv), Dave and an alleged blonde imitated the most representative scenes of the film, consecrating the dual persona (exalted and very serious) of Mr. Grohl, who would use this comedic video style to also make Learn to Fly, where the band dresses up as both crew and passengers traveling on a plane that is about to crash but is promptly brought back on course by the savvy Dave.
The video for Next Year instead presented the band as American astronauts who colonized the moon in the '60s, mixing archival footage with impeccable montages and touching on themes like war and poverty in a video with a declaredly ironic background.
At the time of its release, the album turned out to be an enormous success even if it did not reach the peaks of the previous work which, in my opinion, does not surpass it at all in sound quality.
The lyrics of There is Nothing Left to Lose mostly have a romantic background, some are entirely ironic, others indeed discuss war and politics, and others still can be interpreted as concerning Grohl's life.
Overall, it is an album that does not seduce with its uniqueness or the artists' skill (there are no solos in Foo Fighters' songs) but rather impresses for the strong impact that captivates you even at a first fast and distracted listen.
The subsequent work, One by One, will try to replicate the formula mentioned above but will fail, giving birth to only a couple of memorable songs like the angry All my Life and the poetic Times like these.
"There Is Nothing Left to Lose is a truly complete album, rich with gems like 'Breakout' or 'Learn to Fly.'"
Dave Grohl’s fantastic voice makes every Foo Fighters song unique.
