In Our Honor... And we are very honored that Dave Grohl and his buddies are working hard for us, putting together not one but two albums.
The FF have decided to release a double CD at once, half with the usual Foo rocking style, and half with the usual Foo laid-back style... Because the former Nirvana member has always had his way of making energetic songs and slipping in a few acoustic pieces.
A very good job; an absolutely impeccable recording. They have that nice, decisive sound, clean and well-defined; even the cover has a certain class, particularly the limited edition cardboard one, which includes a DVD containing the album in Dolby version and the behind-the-scenes of the recording compared to the standard version.
And so far, hats off.
The problem is that something is missing; there's a noticeable absence of a fundamental ingredient, previously customary for the band, crucial for creating an album that could remain, even in a small corner, in the history of Rock. I’m referring to that song that sticks in your brain. In classic albums, there's always a song, at least one, destined to become memorable.
The memorable songs from the Foo Fighters are Breakout, Learn To Fly, The One, All My Life, and Times Like These... However, "In Your Honor" lacks its standout song...
Generally, an album becomes a great album when songs are associated with emotions, or when it evokes emotions, and the music coming out of my stereo right now sounds good, but doesn't say much.
"In Your Honor" unfortunately belongs to that category of albums called 'Silence Covers' and not to the 'Creates Emotions' category. Sure, it's really well done, and the booklet contains big names like John Paul Jones from Led Zeppelin (Dave's idol band), close friend Josh Homme, and inexplicably even Norah Jones, but it doesn’t contain anything truly impactful, particularly the first disc. The second CD, the acoustic one, is perhaps more pleasant to listen to.
"In Your Honor" is a suitable background to drift off without too many thoughts under the beach umbrella, in this scorching summer that lies ahead.
In Your Honor 2 must be listened to when you are alone, alone with yourself, alone with your thoughts...
This album helps you move forward, isolating you from the rot that plagues this shitty world and is plaguing you too.
By deciding to release a double album, an artist takes on a significant responsibility: the risk is to end up being either too boastful or boring.
Better than the dreadful There Is Nothing Left To Lose and the stretched One By One, but light years away from that gem known as The Colour And The Shape.
