With the same drive and coldness as men hired at the last minute, fIREHOSE launch into a blitzkrieg made of sketches and hinted, never completed melodies. With circular cohesion, albeit programmatic, they bring to completion the ideal already warmly solidified in the more than closely spaced grooves of the last legacy of the Minutemen, "3 Way Tie (For Last)".
Progressive mentality, like when many understood that you could play Punk Rock, without playing Punk Rock. Compared to the previous (and let's say it) unparalleled sonic experience, the approach tends towards song form, though with all the anti-clichés of the case. Rhythmic hyperboles sometimes born of Jazz, other times saturated with white Funk, John Fogerty-like choral quality and Californian grin. Melodies completed only to be turned upside down. Here lies the strength of the Minutemen’s awareness, only transported into a purely Rock context. Dennes Dale Boon would surely have appreciated it; after all, this was the path already taken. Then it’s a matter of minutes, perhaps moments, and everything disappears. A paradox for those who challenged time and dynamics in such an irreverent way.
What remains is the folklore and magic of one of the most lightning-fast and forward-thinking experiences of the Eighties.
