The Profile

Exciter are a Canadian speed metal band from Ottawa, formed in 1978. The classic early lineup featured Dan Beehler (drums/vocals), John Ricci (guitar), and Allan Johnson (bass). Their early albums defined the high‑velocity sound that influenced thrash metal.

Formed in Ottawa, Ontario, in 1978; originally named Hell Razor before adopting the name from the Judas Priest song “Exciter.” Recognized as pioneers of speed metal with the debut Heavy Metal Maniac (1983), followed by Violence & Force (1984) and Long Live the Loud (1985). John Ricci departed after Long Live the Loud and returned for Kill After Kill (1992). Later notable releases include The Dark Command (1997), Blood of Tyrants (2000), and Thrash Speed Burn (2008).

Exciter, Canadian pioneers of speed metal, get strong praise for early classics Heavy Metal Maniac, Violence & Force, and Long Live the Loud. Unveiling the Wicked is viewed as a divisive, more melodic turn. Kill After Kill is hailed as a fierce return to form with John Ricci back on guitar. New Testament re-records key tracks with cleaner sound. Overall sentiment: loud, fast, and fondly regarded.
