On "November 14, 2006" at the Alcatraz in Milan, Evanescence arrived for the only Italian date of the "The Open Door" promotional tour. An unforgettable concert for fans, technically impeccable, disappointing for non-fans, and a bit too short for everyone.
But let's go in order: first of all, the organization was really poor, few security staff and problems with lining up already early in the morning. Once inside, you realize how small the place is, yet suitable for the purpose of direct contact with the fans.
After not too much waiting, the 'Revelation Theory', an American heavy/thrash metal band that has little in common with the genres the present audience loves, make their entrance. Result: a great performance (with the singer capable of frightening screams), but an "unattentive" audience and songs a bit too repetitive. Anyway, it's warming up.
The moment finally arrives: Amy Lee and her Evanescence appear on stage to the notes of "Sweet Sacrifice". It's madness. Amy's voice is impeccable, the lighting effects not very sophisticated but very suitable and suggestive, the atmosphere just right, the stage a bit too small. Amy finishes the song, greets Milan, and continues. "Weight of the World", very difficult to sing, yet Amy manages it, live, without the slightest flaw and even a small variation on the chorus. The whole concert is a succession of new and old songs (from the previous work "Fallen"), wonderfully sung by Amy's voice, which is flawless as if she were alone in the recording studio, all surrounded by various thanks, hair tricks, banging, and semi-casual skirt lifts for the joy of all.
The setlist is perhaps a little unfortunate ("Bring Me To Life" after "Lacrymosa" is hard to endure without collapsing), while the choice of a short concert (about an hour and a quarter) but full of quality is little understood, without the risk of proposing poorly prepared live tracks or already done on the previous tour.
In conclusion: a short concert, but, if well understood, simply fantastic. But a few more songs wouldn't have hurt.
