Esther Phillips (1935–1984) was an American singer whose versatile, emotive style bridged soul, R&B, jazz, blues, and country. Beginning her career as “Little Esther” with Johnny Otis, she enjoyed multiple comebacks across the 1960s–70s and became renowned for powerful interpretations such as Home Is Where the Hatred Is and What a Diff'rence a Day Makes.
