Sir Ernest Henry Shackleton (1874–1922) was a British (Anglo-Irish) Antarctic explorer and writer, leader of the Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition (Endurance) of 1914–17 and author of South.

Born 15 February 1874, died 5 January 1922. Led multiple Antarctic expeditions, including the Nimrod expedition (1907–09) and the Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition (Endurance, 1914–17). Author of South: The Story of Shackleton's Last Expedition, 1914-17 and The Heart of the Antarctic (1909).

CristianoDA's review praises Shackleton's will and leadership in the 1914–17 expedition (Endurance). The ship is described as trapped and crushed by pack ice, and the account becomes a heroic rescue. The crew survived on seals and penguins; the reviewer calls South one of the most beautiful adventure books and recommends it highly.
