The popularity of maestro Ennio Morricone, thanks also to his recent and well-deserved Lifetime Achievement Oscar, has increased significantly in recent weeks. Box sets containing 2, 3, 4 CDs at more or less affordable prices, featuring the best of the best of the best, are multiplying...
It is clear that enthusiasts of good music were already familiar with the composer's works (perhaps not all, given that there are hundreds). Nonetheless, it is pleasing that the general public, of all ages, has the opportunity to get closer to a certain type of Music with a capital "M," which is often simply labeled as "film music".
Contributing to the large-scale dissemination of Morricone's artistic work these days is the outsider (compared to the aforementioned compilations), "We All Love Ennio Morricone", an interesting collection of interpretations created by famous musicians, each according to their own style and musical taste. It ranges from "The Good, The Bad and The Ugly" masterfully revisited by Quincy Jones and Herbie Hancock to "Je changerais d'Avis" (more famous as "Se telefonando", made popular by Mina) sung by Vanessa and the O's. The wonderful golden voice of Celine Dion sings "I Knew I Loved You", based on the theme from the film "Once Upon a Time in America", while Metallica unleash with a very intense "The Ecstasy Of Gold".
Ennio Morricone enjoyed writing short musical interludes Track to Track, so that the album can be listened to in its entirety without interruption.
The overall result is astonishing. These are not just simple covers, but a compilation of excellent music RE-INVENTED by equally excellent artists. The maestro's works are enriched by these collaborations (if that were ever needed). The typical Morricone's melody proves to be extremely adaptable to any type of voice, musical instrument, or genre.
An album to listen to and to have. It is worth it.
