THE REVIEW

These days I am reading numerous testimonies, written by women.

Among boyfriends who rape, grandfathers who abuse, employers who grope, teachers who kiss, friends who are not too disinterested, and cousins at the mercy of raging hormones, I must admit I have had plenty to ponder.

It's not easy to recount such intimate facts, especially when the first reaction from people almost always culminates in, "it was your fault."

Quite common is the case of the drunk woman: if a woman has been drinking, she is clearly available for sex.

On what principle is a woman altered by alcohol always considered an easy prey and even consenting?

And this is precisely the case at hand.

The fictionalized story of a revenge is almost entirely predictable, at times amusing, but in the apparent lightness hides the cold tragedy of a trauma. The victim sails towards the depersonalization of "am I a person or a piece of meat?".

Behind contradictory behaviors lie layers of violence, more or less severe but determining.

The man who knows and recognizes the line not to be crossed, the one who acts according to his morals, is sometimes mocked by the pack "you didn't seize the opportunity." After all, she "was asking for it."

After all, excuses such as "it's not my fault," "we were just having fun," and "she seemed to like it" are always permissible. And as is well known, opportunity makes the thief.

One cannot reverse the roles, but it's easy to understand the dynamics so that the protagonist, Cassie Thomas, exploits a precise sequence of actions and reactions for her personal need to square the circle, even if it means appearing excessive. Who cares.

As long as it works.

No, it's not a good movie, but it proceeds by hyperboles and hits the mark.

But if a movie hits the target, maybe it's not important for it to be good.

 The film talks about an adolescent trauma. The ending is bitter, but we all stand in solidarity with that 'Promising Young Woman,' one of the most exciting films of the past year.
