THE REVIEW

The term 'supergroup', used to define bands composed of young musicians from diverse musical backgrounds, is curious. Why, indeed, must a group composed of members from already existing bands automatically be labeled as 'super'? So it is. Perhaps Electronic weren't 'super', but certainly, the project had solid foundations and significant feedback.

It happened that in 1984 Bernard Sumner of New Order and Johnny Marr of Smiths met. They sketched an idea. In other words: yes, okay, sure, we have our bands, wouldn't want it any other way, but if we ever get tired of Peter Hook and Morrisey, so to speak, we could meet and do something together, between a guitar and a synth. Nothing major: just some jam sessions among friends.

Said and done. Some time passed, then the two new friends met again, this time not by chance but to lay the foundations of their debut work, "Electronic" (1991). To take the first step, they asked for and received the support of Neil Tennant from the Pet Shop Boys. The result was the single "Getting Away With It", a few minutes of delightful pop, a hybrid between the latest Fleetwood Mac and Kylie Minogue, a song to which Neil also lent his unmistakable voice. It was 1989. The experiment was well-received, with positive feedback from both critics and sales.

The injection of confidence pushed the duo to take courage, thereby experimenting without renouncing their creative vein, overcoming their reluctance to put down traditional instruments in favor of synths. The primary inspiration came from Technotronic, who had taken the world by storm in 1990 with "Pump Up The Jam" and the self-referential "This Beat Is Technotronic". Clearly, the melodic imprint and the structure were rooted in the experiences of the duo, who, synth for synth, didn't emerge from nightclubs but from top-tier live performances and hard work of harmonizing in studios. It results in an album that pays homage to the title and epitaph of the group, a dance project that, however, is not for dancing. It sounds strange, doesn't it? "Electronic" is an album to metabolize and listen to while seated in an armchair, with headphones, under dim lights. Because labeling it as merely a dance project would be superficial. "Electronic" goes deeper.

The song that opens the album, "Idiot Country", is a hybrid of what we will find in the subsequent tracks. Therefore: dance bases, guitars, rhythm, subtle lyrics with immediate impact that hit the mark ("It's an open act of defiance, and it's aimed direct with you. We could form some kind of alliance, we could do what we wanted to do"). The quality of the "unz-unz" in "Reality", where Sumner enjoys playing the coquettish ("I don't need you anymore; I'm not the man you looking for"). And it's precisely where our two cast shadows that the album reaches its highest peaks. "Gangster" ("I don't need a doctor telling me I'm full of juice"), "Try All You Want" ("If you want to go, I just can say no...") and "Some Distant Memory", here magnificently with the invocation of a desperate Sumner ("It's so easy, why are you leaving? Is it just because I've grown afraid of you...?") crowned by the majestic instrumental intermezzo "Soviet", convince and satisfy more than the catchier and loose tracks proposed as singles, the already mentioned "Getting Away With It", "Tighten Up", "Get The Message" and "Feel Every Beat", which precisely because they are singles, choose a safer path proposing a fresher, impactful, and semi-acoustic sound. "The Patience Of A Saint", once again featuring Tennant (supported on this occasion by his partner Lowe on keyboards) on lyrics and voice, slows down the pace and, in the writer's opinion, does not enhance the final product. Much better is the non-album track proposed as a single the following year, "Disappointed", again with Tennant on vocals, which slightly departs from the project for the aforementioned radio reasons.

Among the b-sides, notable is "Free Will" present in the single "Get The Message", a track infused with breakdance and featuring an atypical (given the structure of the track) solo by Marr in the finale.

In short: whether the group is super or not, it is certainly well-matched. Sumner and Marr do not hesitate to embellish while staying on track, leaving a clear and traceable imprint of their past while winking at modernity and, perhaps for the first time, even at worldliness.

Tracklist Lyrics Videos

01   Idiot Country (05:03)

My name is not important, it's a signal, a sign
It means I'm doing what I do because I do it all the time
I get a lot of fun emotion, I get none if I use ya
I would crawl across the ocean so I could not abuse ya

My life's deteriorating at a quarter to eight
Because I wrote myself a letter and I mailed it too late
I got a knock on the door, I got a nail on the floor
I got a nail in my head, but it don't hurt me no more

It's an open act of defiance, and it's aimed DIRECTLY AT YOU
We could form some kind of alliance, we could do what we wanted to do
And the young would live forever
And the sun would shine through the blue
If we got our hands on this nation, we could do what we wanted to do

With all the time I'm sweatin' I've got you on my mind
You're gonna lead me into trouble, you will leave me behind
Well I am not coming to ya, I'll only confuse ya
There's a label on you, I'm gonna rip it in two

02   Reality (05:39)

You keep calling but I'm not at home'
To give me your explanation
I'm not waiting by the telephone
With a feeling of frustration
I always thought that if you understood
You'd clean up this mess and you'd do me some good

I don't need you anymore
I'm not the man you're looking for

Can't you see there's nothing in your head
And your body's on vacation
I keep hearing what I never said
You got me in your conversation
Now it's too late and you get what you see
I don't like this hatred, it just isn't me

03   Tighten Up (04:38)

It's never too late I heard you say
How can you turn and go away
I'm staking my claim to some degree
Don't bring the secret home to me
Better to live than to know
Better the noise that we love than hate
Remember the moments we've got
Whenever I feel like I CAN'T ESCAPE.

There used to be a way but there ain't no more
Tell me why because we need it
I used to run away but I can't no more
'Cause I feel that I can beat it
There used to be a way but there ain't no more

How can we be free? We both need each other like
Sister and brother. You mean that much to me
Better to live than to know
Better the noise that we love than hate
Remember the moments we've left
Whenever I feel I CAN'T ESCAPE.
I'm never gonna do what you want me to

04   The Patience of a Saint (04:10)

Talking of my attributes, the things I do so well
As anyone who's in cahoots with me will readily tell
I've lived up here, I've been down there, I've bought so I could sell
And if I drove a faster car, I'd drive it bloody well
How can I change? I live without restraint

And I would try the patience of a saint

Thinking of my attitudes, talking one on one
I may disagree with you, but look where you've come from
And all that you've got, I thought that I would faint

But I would try the patience of a saint
And I would try the patience of a saint
I would try the patience of a saint

I'm talking to myself (to myself)
I'm talking to the one that I know best

Bury me with gratitude, you can go to hell
Why should I care? I'd rather watch drying paint

But I would try the patience of a saint
And I would try the patience of a saint
I would try the patience of a saint
And I would try the patience...
...of a saint

05   Gangster (05:27)

It's not the way that you would listen
Or the way you comb your hair
It's the fact that you are missing
How I feel when you're not there
I went through all the months of January
Locked up in this cell
I'd like to be at home, but on my own
I didn't do too well

Look at me, I always get the blame
But I can't even learn to spell my name
I like to read, I like to write
But where I live I learn to fight
So don't you ever say that we're the same

I don't need a doctor telling me I'm full of juice
It's not a statement that I'm making, but the plain and simple truth
I went through all the months of January
Locked up in my cell
I'd like to think of home, when I'm alone
It doesn't work too well

06   Soviet (02:00)

Is it any wonder how the world spins its lonely days for me, like a record with its bruises skips a beat of history. In between the grooves is where I lie, wondering where this lover hides.

To the girl with the marble eyes, can it be that you've taken me by surprise, the wind and rain have carried your fame to my front door in spite of my heart's refrain. Capulet and Montegue, never even heard of me and you. I'll keep this secret of how I adore, this passion girl that I was looking for.

Somehow here we are standing i the rain again, if we could only run away, take this train to better days.

To the girl with the marble eyes, can it be that you've taken me by surprise, the wind and rain have carried your fame to my front door in spite of my heart's refrain. Capulet and Montegue, never even heard of me and you. I'll keep this secret of how I adore, this passion girl that I was looking for.

Can I feel that it's all around, in your eyes there lies this perfect sound.

Uhhmmm . . . . I digress.

To the girl with the marble eyes, can it be that you've taken me by surprise, the wind and rain have carried your fame to my front door in spite of my heart's refrain. Capulet and Montegue, never even heard of me and you. I'll keep this secret of how I adore, this passion girl that I was looking for.

07   Get the Message (05:20)

I've always thought of you as my brick wall
Built like an angel, six feet tall
Six feet tall
And when you go away, I start to weep
You're too expensive girl to keep
Isn't it sweet?

I don't know where to begin, living in sin
How can we talk? Look where you've been
I've counted the nights of living in sin
How can we talk? Look where we've been

Take my independent point of view
I've loosened my wallet, thanks to you
Don't do me any favors
Hark, the herald angels sting
Please repair my broken wing
Why won't you look at me? I live and breathe

(We can make it all the time, to live or die)

Blame it on appearance
It might seem
A shame that we're
Not you or me

08   Try All You Want (05:37)

It's the perfect situation
I'm trying hard to understand
You make my life a celebration
And then you never let me down

If you want to go, I just can't say no

You've got me hanging on a string
I find it hard to turn the other cheek
You know it doesn't mean a thing
I could be through with you within a week
It's the perfect situation
I'm trying hard to understand
Is it still infatuation
Between a woman and a man?

There never was a minute on my own
I never felt I needed anyone
It's the perfect situation
I can't hope to understand

09   Some Distant Memory (04:10)

I don't know
If we could get lost in a city this size if we wanted to
And I don't know
If I could survive without seeing you
And every time I see your face
I feel out of place

It's so easy, why are you leaving?
Is it just because I've grown afraid of you?
I wish we were at the beginning
It would be so good to be with you

See that girl? She's over there
I don't need her, she don't care
I could be one in a million
It would be so good to start again

10   Feel Every Beat (05:06)

Have you ever been a victim in a violent fight
When you know it's not true and you know it's not right
Got not one ounce, inch of control
You got lust for blood runnin' in your soul
You know if every person upon this earth
Became the image of the mother in a violent birth
We could sow the seed, toss up the sand
And heal this brutal beat-up land

If there's a place to be why don't you come with me
Listen to your father, listen to your brother
Take every chance that comes, maybe you'll find someone
We don't need to argue, we just need each other

There's a mirror on the table, if you feel you could use it
Don't be ashamed, go ahead just do it
Protect your cranium, let it explode
Put your faith in the mother lode
Now if all this seems to be eccentric
Be aware be sure I meant it
The tunnel of love has got no end
I'm well received, but I don't send
