A serious review about Eiffel 65? Well, why not, especially since their best album, as well as the most suitable for discussing "seriously," has not yet been considered by anyone until now. Our heroes owe their fame and success to their debut album "Europop," which in hindsight turns out to be their least successful episode in terms of structure and blend, but the novelty effect proves to be explosive, and for everything else, there's "Blue" (dabudì dabudà), which the esteemed and authoritative magazine "Rolling Stone" considers to be the most irritating song of all time (if it had been proposed by the current Lady Madonna, I dread to imagine what these shabby mercenaries would have embroidered on it). In any case, having put this aside, Maury, Gabry, and Jeffrey try to prove they can be something more than just a eurodance flash in the pan and they succeed, even if unfortunately they were not given the opportunity to prove it.

The primary cause of the commercial failure of "Contact!" is undoubtedly an absolutely inadequate promotion (practically only two singles were released, including "Back In Time", not one of the album's best episodes, not to mention the not-insignificant detail of a decidedly anonymous cover), which leads them to disappear completely from the international charts where they had made a powerful entry with "Europop"; a shot of despair from Universal that clips the wings of the Piedmontese trio, effectively forcing them to give up any legitimate ambition of establishing themselves internationally. An album like "Contact!" did not deserve this treatment and waste of potential, but by now the damage has been done, it is well-known and recognized that in the music industry there are favorites and underdogs, this is certainly not the first case and unfortunately not even the last, so it is pointless to dwell further on this aspect. "Contact!" remains unmistakably an Eiffel 65 album, so it gets straight to the point without too many frills: rhythm, enthusiasm, and energy, but on the other hand, the musical offering is much more varied and complete compared to the debut, not just eurodance anymore but also forays into other pop realms and, in general, a more mature sound, making it a fully international album with full dignity.

There is definitely a lot on the table, a good seventeen songs in tracklist, a quantity that in most cases ends up being detrimental, but in the end, the only real misstep is the insignificant mash-up with Battiato of "80's Stars," released as a single in Italy (another huge strategic error), but the rest of the offering is extensive and of quality; yes, I said of quality, anything to say? The first thing that catches the ear is the energy, enthusiasm, and positive charge of two instantly catchy anthems like "Lucky (In My Life)" and "One Goal", particularly the latter which if I were a record executive, I would have used as a launch single without sparing resources for an international scale promotion, but apart from this, "Contact!" has many other arrows in its quiver. For example, the fresh, simple, and dynamic synth-pop of episodes like "Morning Time", the beautiful "Jonny Grey", and the compelling "Journey" in conclusion, the electro-funky verve of "New Life" and "Crazy" or the intriguing "space" fantasy of "I Don't Wanna Lose". Personally, my favorites are the electro-orchestral midtempo "King Of Lullaby" with its majestic and visionary pace (perfect as a second single, preferably accompanied by a highly creative video clip) and "Brightly Shines", perhaps the most "refined" song of E65, with skillful and perfectly fitting use of vocal effects, an epic and intense refrain, excellent electronic rhythmic base, and a nice instrumental bridge.

Of course, there are also more strictly club-like episodes in line with the first album, among which the fun and well-crafted "People Of Tomorrow" stands out (another untapped potential single) along with various "Losing You", "I DJ With The Fire", "Faraway", and "Back In Time", which seamlessly complete the album of maturity for these three guys who, although far from being the ABBA of our home, knew what they were doing and above all knew very well that they were (and unfortunately for them, this was also their downfall). I wonder if one day the record executives and the Italian media will realize what they had (despite themselves) stumbled upon and threw to the wind, treating E65 like rabid dogs: when will an Italian record ever reach the fourth place again on the American hit parade? (not to mention fifth in the Canadian one, fourth in New Zealand, and an honorable twelfth in the UK) Together with Eiffel 65, we lost the opportunity to present ourselves as exporters of "young" and dynamic music as well as born-dead garbage in third-rate markets. But evidently, the good gentlemen don't care, better to cover the Amy Winehouses and the Adeles of the day with praise, like the good vassals we are. Well, luckily I still have their songs, faithful companions in moments of leisure and lightheartedness; I already have far too many reasons to get depressed and angry, should I look for more in music? Not even for a...

Back in time
Always up and down.
All the time I'm flying high

Back in time,
In my time all the time.
Up and down
Every time I'm flying.
Back in time,
In my time one more time.
Always up and down.
All the time I'm flying high.

Back in time,
In my time all the time.
Up and down
Every time I'm flying.
Back in time,
In my time one more time.
Always up and down.
All the time I'm flying high.

Here in the open space where nothing
Seems to move at all
I can run this race back in time
From the world I can hide

Here in the open space where something
Seems to float and not fall
I can feel the madness slow down
I'm the master of time

Back in time,
In my time all the time.
Up and down
Every time I'm flying.
Back in time,
In my time one more time.
Always up and down.
All the time I'm flying high.

Back in time,
In my time all the time.
Up and down
Every time I'm flying.
Back in time,
In my time one more time.
Always up and down.
All the time I'm flying high.

Here in the open space where nothing
Seems to move at all
I can run this race back in time
From the world I can hide

Here in the open space where something
Seems to float and not fall
I can feel the madness slow down
I'm the master of time

Back in time,
In my time all the time.
Up and down
Every time I'm flying.
Back in time,
In my time one more time.
Always up and down.
All the time I'm flying high.

Back in time,
In my time all the time.
Up and down
Every time I'm flying.
Back in time,
In my time one more time.
Always up and down.
All the time I'm flying high.

The journey
Into the people
Into the sounds, into the truth
The truth is out there, inside of you
A journey, a journey in you

Journey
Into the people
People that reach out
Reach out for something
Again and again
The journey
Beyond the limits
Limit in your mind
Changing what you see again

Journey
Into the people
People that reach out
Reach out for something
Again and again
The journey
Beyond the limits
Limit in your mind
Changing what you see again and again
The journey
Beyond the limits
Limit in your mind
Changing what you see again

Into you
Yes, into yourself and into the truth
And again and again

Journey
Into the people
People that reach out
Reach out for something
Again and again
The journey
Beyond the limits
Limit in your mind
Changing what you see again

Into you
Yes, into yourself and into the truth
And again and again

Reach out for something
Again
The journey
Beyond the limits
Limit in your mind
Changing what you see again
