Metallica

The most innovative? The most historic? Not even with a telescope! The Sabbath were setting the standards for Metal while Hetfield and his gang were still going through puberty. Bringing Metal to catchy levels? Because, before that, it was unlistenable? British Steel, just to name one, has an astonishing immediacy. For the rest I've already said, the band has its merits, but overall it's pretty overrated. And the Megadeth piss all over them, no doubt about it.

Riot

Perhaps the most underrated and unfortunate metal band of all time. Six impeccable albums in a row, plus a turning point that keeps them at very high peaks. Guitarist Reale is undoubtedly among the best ever in the genre: after all, he not only anticipates Heavy, but also Power (Thundersteel is from '88, but the single comes from a demo from '84), not to mention his tremendous ability to combine significant technical skills with outstanding taste... definitive.

Iron Maiden

Overrated? Absolutely not, listen to their first seven albums plus some gems post '88 and then let's talk again. A career built on the same power chords? You're confusing them with the Ramones. Sure, they make extensive use of the same chords, but the songs are very different from each other. They've had their dark moments (Virtual XI above all), but if they're not one of the best metal bands out there, then we're in trouble.

Judas Priest

Simply a truly great Heavy Metal band, in some ways the best ever. They have managed to evolve over the years while always remaining within the Heavy Metal realm. With Sad Wings of Destiny they helped create Heavy Metal, with Defenders of the Faith they produced one of the most iconic albums of the genre, and with Painkiller they laid the groundwork for the more aggressive and "modern" Heavy Metal of the '90s, but of course always in their own way. What can I say, it's history...

Manowar

First 4-6 albums are textbook Heavy/Epic. Then came nothing. With Warriors of the World, they confirmed themselves as well, along with the usual pathetic statements, the biggest circus act of recent years.
