From what I see, this album is really overrated by many people... I mean, too many 4s and 5s(!) come on... they are just predictable little songs, rarely original, masked by cheesy arrangements, predictable and sometimes annoying in their useless plastic epicness, just look at the cinematic-style string arrangements. The singer has good expressiveness, but the material he works with is too mediocre... I've heard comparisons to "Grace" by Jeff Buckley... for heaven's sake!! Let's not joke around!!

@GustavoTanz: Trespass is great, but I consider it inferior to the next 4. :)

Yes, yes, that’s absolutely true; prog fanatics are even more narrow-minded than some metalheads. They are convinced that progressive is the only music worth listening to and they trash everything else, despite knowing nothing about it. Just look at recently appeared elements on this site like SQUIREISGOD.

Sunflower, I completely agree with you, but what does it have to do with it? Who said that only prog exists?

Exactly! Stoopid was referring to REGRESSIVE rock, not PROGRESSIVE rock.

For me, the 4 albums from "Nursery Cryme" to "The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway" are immortal masterpieces of progressive rock. Far superior to the average of their genre (symphonic prog). It's true that there are more brilliant or original prog artists out there (especially in the Canterbury scene), but to label them as empty and pompous, not to mention as lowbrow, is a different matter. Those adjectives fit perfectly with ELP, I completely agree, but the Genesis are something else...

I can understand Emerson, Lake & Palmer, but Genesis "riffraff"???

Great Stoney, as always! I’ll add: and the shipwreck is sweet to me in this sea! :D

Eleventh review, fuck!!! Absurd! Even if it were the best album ever (AND IT'S NOT), so many duplicates would still be unacceptable. "Octavarium" is nothing but a rehash of the usual clichéd stuff taken from their repertoire, lacking moments of brilliance or originality. It's a reheated soup that almost borders on pathetic when it explicitly plagiarizes, besides themselves, Muse, Metallica, Pink Floyd, and even U2 (in the coldest and most sterile way possible, by the way). Anyone who considers this album a masterpiece probably has their head stuffed with bullshit and mental gymnastics about instrument techniques that are unnecessarily self-serving. I would add, for those who say it's underrated, that it’s actually the opposite; it’s idolized far and wide like something special...

Those who identify punk with the Sex Pistols don't understand a damn thing about music.
