For me, the merit lies in being well-stretched and never tiring or boring, and discussing it adequately is more an objective matter than a subjective one. The flute phrases are well placed and not scattered here and there. The groups you mention are undoubtedly more technical, but it's pointless to compare the contents of two types of prog that are at opposite ends.

Sure, we can debate whether or not they are 100% prog, but I really don't think they are overrated. Plus, it doesn't make sense to compare such different types of prog... What do they have to do with Canterbury? And why would "Thick as a Brick" be a joke?

And then you only mention the technically and compositionally best groups? And the myriad of worse groups??

Overrated? And based on what do you say that? Only 3 albums by Jethro Tull truly belong to the progressive scene as such, of which 2 (Aqualung and Thick as a Brick) are really excellent and not overrated by anyone (especially the latter), and one album, A Passion Play, has always faced harsh criticism. The term "overrated" does not fit Jethro Tull at all.

Better than Yes? I don't think so, my Lord, at least considering the lineup with Wakeman, Howe, and Bruford.
