Strapping Young Lad City
Voto:
I already expressed my opinion about the album in the other City review, so I won’t add anything more. Just that maybe you could have done the review a bit differently (I wouldn't even know how to do it myself ;-))....
Anyway, I'm just rambling because when it comes to Strapping, I'm biased; they’re my favorite band. I think I’ll write a review of the latest one; it should arrive in a few days. By the way: do you have it? How is it?

You are absolutely right when you say that the avant-garde is extremely enjoyable when accompanied by a strong sense of humor. Besides the various Zorn and Patton, I think of Frank Zappa and Devin Townsend, the leader of Strapping Young Lad, one of my all-time favorite bands. There are plenty of them, but these are the only ones coming to mind right now... Help me out.

Well, on the other hand, how could we label Carl Stalling if not as an avant-garde artist? In the 30s, who else was slamming together such disparate musical elements in pieces lasting four minutes or even less? And then, absolute genius, where does he apply these compositions? To... cartoons! Something unthinkable, I believe, at that time.

What can I say... actually, there’s so much to say... Strapping are among my absolute favorite bands, and City is truly one of the most revolutionary albums in the metal scene of the last ten years. Townsend and his theories on polyphony, that "atomic clock" of Gene Hoglan, the cyberpunk atmosphere of the whole CD, this constantly changing city just like Strapping themselves... truly unique, brilliant, and ironic.
Rick Wakeman The Six Wifes Of Henry VIII

I keep this album on cassette and haven't listened to it in a long time... but it's really beautiful. Wakeman is one of my favorite keyboardists in the prog scene; even though he is technical, he never falls into the trap of pointless self-indulgent virtuosity.

Mr. Sfascia, in addition to Carrozze, I strongly recommend this magnificent work, it’s all to be discovered. The Warner cartoons are now legendary, and while I was listening to the pieces, I recalled some scenes from these cartoons and I swear I was laughing heartily like an idiot (nothing new for me in that sense). Great Sfascia, thank you for stopping by and for taking the trouble to read the review.

One last thing: regarding his obsession with repeating the performances of pieces dozens and dozens of times, Stalling was influenced by Raymond Scott, a jazz musician from the early 1900s (I don't know him well, frankly), famous for his obsessive precision, his very calculating demeanor, and his little tolerance for improvisation!!! A real pain in the ass, in short.

Ah, among the many things about Stalling, one very important thing comes to mind: he was the first to use the now-famous "tick System," which allows musicians to hear the metronomic beat in their headphones, thus achieving an extremely high level of performance precision, even regarding the editing phase with the various storyboards of the cartoons. Even in technical fields, Carl Stalling was great!

Thank you very much, especially to the Dwarfs who immediately published the review. I fully endorse everything written by odradek; unfortunately, there are many things about Carl Stalling that I couldn’t write because it would have turned into something abnormal and even unreadable. I only have this first collection downloaded from e-mule, so you can try to find something there. Odradek, at this point we are waiting for your review on the second volume...

Group among the great innovators in cutting-edge metal along with those geniuses of arcturus. I don't have this demo, but pills and in harmonia universalis are pure sonic madness. But why is there the cover of the linear scaffold?
