Damn: I leave you alone for 2 minutes and immediately I find other very interesting comments. Regarding the statues of the saints: yes, it's a pathetic thing but it's part of the cultural baggage of a people. In the south, for example, there is a lot of attention towards the statues of the Madonna (in Orthodox countries, there is even the veneration of icons, something that in the past led to the failed iconoclasm of the Byzantine emperor).

One must recognize that sometimes people exaggerate in criticizing the Church. I know a girl who in class screams against "the great conspiracy of the clerical to keep hidden that Jesus was married" (she read The Da Vinci Code). But she is a case apart: no one gives her any attention, so she feels obliged to be mean and break other people's balls.
