Easy Star All Stars Dub Side Of The Moon

Nice, I would have never said it, but I really liked it a lot, especially Time (with Rankin' Joe and Corey Harris); there's also a nice DVD out that features Easy Star performing the entire album live. I have Radiodread, but it's kind of a half-baked idea, it really doesn't hold up in comparison.

I saw it about ten years ago and it seemed to me an almost brilliant film; watched again more recently, it didn’t strike me as anything special, a fundamentally trash movie, but with some good grotesque ideas. Many strong scenes were cut at the time of the theatrical release to avoid a rating of 18.

I completely disagree; this is a film that literally rips apart the institution of the bourgeois family, with a ferocity that hasn't been seen in a while. And while certain elements may feel familiar (yet another critique of the American Way Of Life, somewhat stereotypical characters), the undeniable technical mastery of the director (making his debut here) and the skill of the great Kevin Spacey cannot be overlooked.

Yes, but if you take away the basic idea from Blair Witch (which you yourself admit is not original), what remains? An hour and a half of shaky and off-screen footage, not exactly brilliant dialogues, and the "big idea" of a monster that is never seen throughout the film (which some cynical people attribute to budget constraints rather than a deliberate choice), a gimmick that has also been seen and revisited countless times.

a standard critique you missed: excessive autonomy of camera and camcorder batteries

No, with your answer you haven't dismantled anything at all. To be original, it's not enough to reinterpret elements from other films; you need to INVENT something. The fundamental idea around which the whole film revolves (the device of the fake finding of the fake documentary) is not original because Deodato used it 20 years earlier: this is not a criticism, it's a fact. Then, it's obvious that the two films take opposite paths; one focuses on showing everything (too much), while the other focuses on showing nothing. But this doesn't make BWP a 100% original film.

I said that the idea behind the film was copied, not that they are the same; that doesn’t change the fact that there are several similarities: 1) a similar documentary-style setup and a film passed off as “true” 2) the ending where everyone dies, with the camera continuing to film from the ground 3) both films feature protagonists who get lost (jungle in Cannibal, forest in Blair). Do you need more similarities?
