John Waters Pink Flamingos
Voto:
I'm glad to see that here Waters has several admirers! I feel like recommending it to CptGaio, because the film is certainly "a bit strong" and openly provocative in many scenes, but there's no trace of the tedious voyeuristic morbidity on which other films are built (like Cannibal Holocaust or the various Mondo Cane), here everything is very spontaneous, joyful, and nonsensical. The uncertainties of the direction and the semi-amateur editing do not diminish the power of this work which, it's worth remembering, dates back to 1972 (around the time when in Italy people were scandalized by Carrà dancing the Tuca Tuca). And then, as Ajeje used to say, it's a truly unique and hilarious film, enjoyable even for those who don't worship trash.
Tim Burton Big Fish - Le Storie Di Una Vita Incredibile

The review is very nice, even though I didn't like the film much; the tribute to Browning's Freaks is beautiful, but Burton's visionary potential feels somewhat stifled by a certain excess of syrup.
Henk Harvey Carnival Of Souls

The figure of the zombie had already gained prominence long before, thanks to films like "White Zombie" (1932) and "I Walked With A Zombie" (1943). I haven't seen this one, but I've heard good things about it.
Luis Buñuel Il Fascino Discreto Della Borghesia
Voto:
I completely disagree, the film is a magnificent masterpiece by Bunuel (who is, after all, Spanish, not French), and along with "La via lattea" and "Il fantasma della libertà," it's perhaps one of my absolute favorite films.
George A. Romero La notte dei morti viventi
Voto:
film-institution of horror cinema, a masterpiece full of brilliant insights; Romero makes the film after being in Vietnam (as a photographer, I believe), where he comes into contact with the violence and horror of a bloody war, which will provide him with the inspiration for the marked gore/splatter component of his films. Moreover, he chooses a Black protagonist, which was very unusual for films of that time.
Gabriele Salvatores Quo Vadis, Baby?
Voto:
a really bad movie: boring, too slow, and with some plot twists that are totally outlandish; as usual, Salvatores completely misses the mark, believing that inserting a few cinephile quotes and some nice shots is enough to make a good film. Moreover, even the actors are quite terrible.
Werner Herzog Aguirre, Furore Di Dio

great, among Herzog's finest

Good for them, I guess, but for me (like for most of the people here) the Maston were just a pain in the ass.
